The trivia portion will be lead up to the panel discussion, presented by Toronto’s U.S. Consulate and with remarks from U.S. Consul General Baxter Hunt.

Sylvia Bashevkin is a professor emerita in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto. Best known for her research in the field of gender and politics, Bashevkin’s scholarly distinctions include fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Political Science Association Prize in International Relations, and many more. She has won numerous public recognitions including the 2020 Woman of Distinction award in the field of education from YWCA Toronto.
Jonathan Bayer is the University College Fellow in Early American History at the University of Toronto. He received his BA from Walla Walla University in 2013, his MA from the University of Windsor in 2016, and his PhD from the University of Western Ontario in 2023. His relevant research interests include fake news and the early American press, constructions of race in American history and politics, election songs of the United States, and Canadian-American relations.
Baxter Hunt, a career diplomat in the Senior Foreign Service, began serving as U.S. Consul General in Toronto in October, 2023. He is back in Canada following his posting at the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa from 2001 until 2004. In Washington, DC, Mr. Hunt served as Deputy Executive Secretary in the Office of the Secretary of State from 2015 until 2017. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Mr. Hunt was a Presidential Management Fellow serving in the Department of State, the Department of Defense, and the National Security Council.
